The 20th Prince Takamado Cup concluded last weekend, with Yokohama F. Marinos Youth lifting the trophy for the first time. This year’s competition saw 16 teams play in a straight knockout format over three weekends.
The Chugoku region was well represented this year, with three clubs making it through the various qualification competitions. Least successful of them was Hiroshima Kannon High School, who went down 3-1 to FC Tokyo Youth in the first round. Tottori’s Yonago Kita High School, based in the same town as Gainare Tottori, overcame JEF United U18 2-1 but fell to Mitsubishi Yowa 2-0 in the quarter finals.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima Youth were the most successful Chugoku team. They drew with Jubilo Iwata 2-2 in the semi-finals, but lost the penalty shootout 5-4 at the National Olympic Stadium.
OSAKI Junya added to his tally in the game, but he was unable to add a winner’s medal from this competition to the BMW Balcom Cup winner’s medal earned back in August. Osaki also scored both goals in the 2-0 defeat of Vissel Kobe Youth in the first round. As a sannensei, this is Osaki’s last year with Sanfrecce Youth before he either moves up to the senior team or is let go.
INAMI Sena, a 17 year-old from Ishikawa-ken, was the other player to score for Sanfrecce in the Iwata game. Inami, a ninensei, also scored in the 2-0 quarter-final win over Fujieda Meisei High School of Shizuoka-ken.
SUNAGAWA Yutaro, another ninensei with a year left at Sanfrecce Youth and a Hiroshima native, scored Sanfrecce’s remaining goal against Fujieda.
